ABOUTHANNAH KUHLMANN (B. 1989, COLOGNE, GERMANY) CREATES CONCEPTUAL OBJECTS AT THE INTERSECTION OF DOMESTIC LIFE, SCULPTURE, AND LIGHT. HER PRACTICE CENTERS ON METAL, WHICH SHE APPROACHES NOT AS A PURELY STRUCTURAL MATERIAL, BUT AS AN INTIMATE, TACTILE MEDIUM — CONCEIVED AS ADORNMENT FOR A ROOM RATHER THAN AS FURNITURE IN THE CONVENTIONAL SENSE. HER OBJECTS OCCUPY SPACES QUIETLY, YET WITH A DISTINCT SENSE OF AUTONOMY AND PRESENCE.

QUESTIONING IDEALS OF INDUSTRIAL PERFECTION AND SERIAL UNIFORMITY, KUHLMANN CONCEIVES HER WORKS AS COMPANIONS RATHER THAN PRODUCTS. CUT, FOLDED, BENT, AND ASSEMBLED, SHEET METAL IS TREATED MUCH LIKE A PATTERN OR GARMENT: A SURFACE THAT WRAPS, DRESSES, OR FRAMES SPACE. SUBTLE SHIFTS, SEAMS, AND TRACES OF FABRICATION REMAIN VISIBLE, ALLOWING THE PROCESS TO STAY PRESENT WITHIN THE FINISHED OBJECT.

EACH PIECE IS CRAFTED BY HAND IN HER COLOGNE STUDIO AND EXISTS IN SMALL, LIMITED SERIES. THROUGH A MAKING PROCESS AKIN TO TAILORING, KUHLMANN EMBRACES IRREGULARITIES AND MATERIAL RESISTANCE, ALLOWING FORM TO EMERGE THROUGH NEGOTIATION RATHER THAN CONTROL. THE RESULTING OBJECTS OSCILLATE BETWEEN FUNCTION AND ORNAMENT, EVOKING A QUIET INTIMACY AND INVITING A HEIGHTENED AWARENESS OF THE MUNDANE AND THE EVERYDAY.

KUHLMANN HOLDS A BACHELOR OF FINE ARTS IN DESIGN FROM THE ACADEMY OF FINE ARTS IN MAASTRICHT.
UNTIL 2025, SHE WORKED UNDER THE NAME STUDIO KUHLMANN.

Meet Me In The Middle explores the imprint of jewelry on spatial design—a focus that emerged from the realization that the practices we were drawn to shared an unspoken, almost subconscious connection to intimacy.

The exhibition brings together eight female designers who navigate this terrain. For some, this traces back to foundational training; for others, it appears as an inherited sensitivity to material, symbolism, or touch.

Rather than a deliberate translation of the small into the large, this connection takes the form of an instinct that persists—an attention to closeness and detail that remains intact as scale expands. The result is a collection of functional works that ask to be lived with, yet treated with the reverence of an heirloom.

The title, Meet Me In The Middle, points to this convergence: functional forms shaped by the tactile precision and emotional register of jewelry.

The Semiotics of Dressing, 2025Jaqueline Sullivan Gallery

	<img width="1600" height="1067" width_o="1600" height_o="1067" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/92e3af1d559734a64bbf1793f4785e665afe3aed80503baf6bd8ad12ec5cd608/HK_JSG_01.jpg" data-mid="236787150" border="0"  src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/92e3af1d559734a64bbf1793f4785e665afe3aed80503baf6bd8ad12ec5cd608/HK_JSG_01.jpg" />
The act of dressing, though an ordinary domestic rite, is an exquisitely choreographed performance. Subtle repeated movements, gestures and tactile engagement with furniture, objects and surrounding space demonstrate a private yet performative way of being. The dressing room represents a lexicon of endless meaning and possibility, an open stage where routines and patterns naturally articulate a distinct personal identity. The exhibition’s title, The Semiotics of Dressing is an ode to the artist Martha Rosler’s feminist video work, The Semiotics of the Kitchen (1975), which explored the unsettling significance of everyday kitchen utensils as symbols of domestic labor, oppression and control. Similarly, this exhibition investigates the way in which a seemingly banal and habitual task can be laden with complex notions of identity, power, agency and self actualization.

In The Semiotics of Dressing, contemporary artists interrogate the concept of the dressing room as a private place of metamorphosis; it is a jewel box where delicate adornments become instruments in service of beauty. Furniture, lighting, art and decorative objects comprise the dressing room’s scenography, a deliberate and thoughtful – even possibly peculiar – arrangement. Particular rituals exercised in private (even secret) versus what is public (the costume, the mask), provide fertile grounds for artistic exploration throughout a variety of materials such as metal, gemstones, textiles, glass, found objects and more. These artistic articulations signify the act of dressing as a singular, theatrical composition, uniquely one’s own.

Act I: BORN WITH A SILVER SPOON

As you step into the dimly lit elevator, the air shifts - time itself seems to slow.

Before you stands an authority, offering a hand, a tool for your journey.

Choose your friend wisely!

You have only a moment before the doors open again.

Your journey begins.

Act II: FROM THE FOUNTAIN OF LIFE

You enter a transitional space,a symbolic arrival on sphere.

Before you, a fountain flows.

AMBROSIA TONIC

Drink from me!

Use your tool, your new hand.

SMALL PICKLES

are placed gently upon your tongue, floating in liquid, like our bodies before we arrived.

Soft fabric catches your fingertips- a cloth napkin, a moment of grace.

Will you embrace pleasure?

Can you surrender to the current?

A moment lingers, then the path unfolds.

Together, we move forward.

Act III:

THERE IS NO SPOON

Reality bends like liquid steel. To shape it, unlearn its shape.

Before you:

PANI PURI PRE-RIGOR SALMON TAMARIND

BEETROOT BOUILLON MUSHROOM BAOZI

MISO EGGPLANT CORN TORTILLA KADAYIF

PICKLED ONION

BUFFALO CAULIFLOWER MASHED POTATOES

Look up.

Tube shakers await your command.

Your tools are here, use carefully! Transform what you see. The moment is fluid.

What will you create?

The air thickens, the moment suspends.

A pause lingers on the horizon.

Wait for the gong SMOKERS BREAK

Act IV:

SPOONING

A table stretches endlessly before you,

a gleaming river of life,

a sweet abyss.

a melody weaving through

like a final lullaby.

Before you, the PAVLOVA

delicate and weightless,

its surface whispers of

YUZU AND MASCARPONE,

a final indulgence,

a fleeting moment of sweetness.

A spoon sinks,

cracking the fragile shell

fragments scatter like memories,

dissolving on the tongue.

The past melts away,

sugar coating your farewell.

Nothing truly ends.

Only transforms.

The exhibition showcases the latest creations by German welder and designer Hannah Kuhlmann, delving into the intricate balance between perception and reality. Known for her minimalist tube lighting fixtures, Hannah Kuhlmann beckons viewers to immerse themselves in her creations and envision fictional characters within. Each meticulously handcrafted piece serves as a testament to Kuhlmann's expertise, boldly merging the industrial allure of metal with the soft tactility of fabric. For her first solo presentation, 'Lucid Dreams' pays homage to the fleeting refuge of a midday nap—a momentary escape from the demands of reality into the realm of unconsciousness. Within a scenographed ethereal space, each object conceals intricacies akin to the unexpected encountered in dreams. Fabric veils metal, echoing the illusion that shrouds reality.

	PASSIFLORA
Through the work of Hannah Kuhlmann &amp; Delphine Lejeune
At the top of a rocky mountain, at a place unknown today, stood for many centuries a peculiar little plant. It grew next to some stately trees and long grasses, next to wildflowers and rose gardens, looking over cliffs upon oceans vast and jungles of old.
Even though the area was surrounded by all this beauty, it was still this seemingly little plant that stole the show. For at times the plant grew a flower, a flower so strange and enchanting that she remained the beauty of that entire hillside. The flower, later named Passiflora, stood in the middle of the path and when blooming captured the attention of many passers-by for a grand amount of time, each of them halting in their journey to look at the little thing.
The sun and the moon found it first. In
Brazil it was the Tupi-Guarani that explained the debut of the Passiflora. Their story starts with a forbidden love affair, the beginning of many fine stories. It was the Moon (landé) and the Sun (Jaci) that fell into this old lover's cliché. And even though their love was strong, the climate of the story goes cold rather quickly. Their secret is discovered by the supreme god, Tupã, who is furious with the Moon and the Sun. Tupã acts severely and banishes them to opposite sides of the sky, separating them forever. But the love of Moon and Sun was strong, and their longing for each other agony. Both shed many tears over the loss of the other, drip drip drip upon the earth, while missing each other every night, by an inch, at the switch of the light.
There is no happy ending to this story. The sun still sets, the moon still rises, even till this day. Yet where their tears fell on the earth, the littlest sparkle of their love, of beauty, persists, and out of the damp soil the tears transform into a vine that
carries beautiful Aowers and a fruit. The fruit, their offspring, showing the radiant Sun on her outer shell, and the moon's tears in her inner flesh and seeds. And even in de busy streets of Antwerp, when the two celestial beings pass each other, a Passiflora in the flower shop on the corner feels their passing, shudders its leaves and the one who looks closely sees its stamens tremble, as it closes its petals with each coming of dawn.
It was the Spaniards who noticed the flower next. They recognized it at once, from the tips of its stamens to the number of its petals, the body of Christ! They gave it its Latin name, that would eventually become the English "Passionflower"; passio meaning suffering. The flower immediately became a symbol for the last days of their Jesus, in particular his crucifixion, and in every part they recognized a part of his body and of the dreadful moments of his suffering: the Holy Lance [a], the ten apostles [b] (leaving out those that betrayed or defied him), the crown of thorns [c], the Holy Grail [d], the three nails [e], the five wounds [f] (four by the nails and one by the lance) and the whips [g] were all found within the flower, Heaven and Purity in the colors, the three years of Jesus' ministry in the period that the flower remind opened. Some of the most enthusiastic supporters of this Christian symbolism even stated that the place where the flower was first discovered (somewhere in Peru) could have been the site of the Garden of Eden, and that the apple with which the serpent to tempted Eve was actually a passion fruit (yet this information was only found on a blog) .
The Spaniards stripped the plant of all past identity and took it home with them at the other end of the sea, where it at once began adorning churches, glass windows and book illustra-tions, its use coming to a peak during the Victorian era. Now, some centuries later, it is planted in gardens and living rooms.
54
Middle-aged men dabble in the creation of hybrids, and all are sold and bought at large garden centra, given names like "Snow Queen", "Party Animal" or even named after their breeders' mothers and wives.
The stripping and regifting of identity
and names is a common phenomenon in the world of botanica.
Scientists, searching for a way to make sense of the world, classify plants with their musty Latin names and biological terminology.
So the plant was eventually called the Passiflora, a genus of more than 550 species of flowering plants and the type genus of the family Passifloracee. This family consists mostly of a species of vines carrying tendrils for attachment but have many variations in roots and stems. The distinctive and often colorful filaments in the corona give the Passiflora its alien-like look, and many of the flowers eventually ripen into the tasty passion fruit. Each species' sex-life is different: while some rely on pollination by bees and other winged creatures, others remain more independent and are capable of self-pollination'. Some even develop a proto-carnivorous diet, killing insects that land on them while unable to digest or absorb anything ("proto-" implying that their evolutionary path could eventually lead to a carnivorous lifestyle).
Today, the flower still stands in the middle of the path, right where we left it at the start of this story. But now we run into its ghost in a Lustgarten. At the center, a few of them stand proudly.
These "pleasure gardens" were conceived as private paradises for the upper class, who forced nature into symmetry and geometrical shapes, producing a seemingly harmonious mixture of nature and the manmade, often ornamented by stone-cold gods, statues and myths displayed on pedestals. Hannah Kuhlmann and Delphine Lejeune shaped another temporary resting place for these ghosts of the real thing, placing an artificial offspring of the Passiflora within a Lustgarten of their own. This Passiflora-is-Jesus-enthusiasm was not adopted by all.
John Parkinson published Paradisus in 1629 and appended the following commentary to his portrait of the flower:
"some superstitious Jesuite would faine make men believe, that in the flower of this plant are to be seen all the marks of our Savious Passion: and therefore call it Flos Passionis: and to that end have caused figures to be drawne and printed with all the parts proportioned out, as thorne, nailes, speare, whippe, pillar etc in it", before adding scornfully "and all as true as the Sea burnes... God never willed his Priests to instruct his people with lyes: for they come from the Divell, the author of them."
2. On the edge of limestone cliffs in Belize grows the Passiflora xiikzods, discovered in 1992. The name derives from the Mayan "batwing", and in the wild this dark species of Passiflora is found in proximity to Mayan temples. The xiikzods is a mystery among the Passiflora, states Dr. Vanderplank, expert in the Passiflora, as it has no nectar; moreover, its pollinators are unknown as is the reward that would motivate their return.
Experts can only guess how her offspring is produced. The gooey dark red center might resemble blood, which could attract wasps; this might explain why the plant only grows near Mayan temples. Regarding the blood, Vanderplank states: it seems there was usually plenty of the real thing about!

Farm is a free participatory art and design project by ten young artists and designers and the organic farm Rimpertsweiler near Lake Constance in Germany.
The project is an open exploration of rural life on a farm and thematically deals with concepts of alternative production methods, organic material cycles and the relationship between humans, plants, animals, soil and technology in relation to our everyday practice. In a place that keeps waste to a minimum, we learn about the relationship between cow dung and cabbage and the sensitive balance of the whole organism. To the rhythmic sounds of milking machines, we dive deep into daily routines and understand what regionality and seasonality mean away from the supermarket shelves. Through a crossdisciplinary exchange with people from the surrounding area and the farm itself, various objects as well as experimental and site-specific works are developed as a result. Presented in an open-field exhibition on the farm, the project aims to foster a cultural and social dialogue in a non-institutionalised space and bring people from urban and rural areas together. The project will be extended through various workshops by the group as well as local artists, which will expand the exhibition over a two month summer period.

Hannah Kuhlmann is an interdisciplinary designer and also maintains a curatorial practice, in which she regularly organizes exhibitions that create spaces for dialogue and exchange between local and international positions.

Since 2015, she has curated numerous exhibitions, especially during Passagen Cologne. In 2018, the exhibition “Homo Ludens” received the Passagen Prize for Best Exhibition Design and Concept. In 2020, she founded the project space 101PS in Cologne as a framework to bring together and further develop her curatorial practice.

She initiated Many to Many, a working group of ten international artists who developed several exhibitions together, including projects in a former monastery on the Mosel and at Schloss Hollenegg in Austria. She is also part of Blow Shops, a collective that experiments with new retail concepts and presents exhibitions across European cities — including the Collectible Fair in Brussels, NHO Girl in Amsterdam, as well as in Brussels and Düsseldorf, where the group is based.

In addition, she organizes an annual exhibition at 101PS called Apophoreta, a Christmas show that highlights younger designers and affordable objects.

Her exhibitions often emerge from temporary collectives and function as open platforms for collaboration. If you are interested in developing projects together, feel free to get in touch.

A temporary destination for functional objects
BLOW SHOP is an ever-evolving store concept connecting creatives from various backgrounds under the umbrella of a unique retail experience.
It is an independent, self-initiated stage that focuses on presenting collectible designs and limited edition objects whose functionality gives way to their aesthetics. Reinventing traditional retail experience lies at the heart of the concept, therefore all exhibited objects are for sale during temporary opening hours. The jointly organized format stems from the idea of creating a place for networking and the positioning of up-and-coming designers. After the first edition in Düsseldorf in December 2021, and five following editions in Berlin, Antwerp and Cologne, BLOW SHOP continues to gather an extended list of participants from various disciplines ranging from fashion to jewelry to object design.

The collective of 9 female designers hold a residency as part of the exhibition “EAST to WEST” at Schloss Hollenegg.
Each of them have a different background within their own practice, a different approach in their own story but in a way, they all share similar interests.
As a collective, they aim to explore new approaches for an interdisciplinary exchange and a symbiotic design process. Many–to–Many's approach is to give space to female realities and to facilitate moments of collective dreaming that broaden our imagination and will lead us into alternative futures.

The better version of ourselves is born with storytelling. May it be in a job interview, our instagram feed or an artist statement. The image we present to others evokes trust. Trust in us, trust in our assets. And with their rise, also our stock price is growing. So we build our narratives to be ready for a stand up elevator pitch. Of course, the most promising story wins. And the winner goes home with the money.
Ursula Le Guin describes in ‚The Carrier Bag Theory of Fiction‘, how the first tool of humans wasn’t a spear but must have been a bag or some form of container. Nutrition was covered by seeds and other foods that could be collected, which they needed a storage for - the container. But what everyone remembers and what made it into art was the glorious stories of the hunters with their spears. The heros and heroines of the party after a long day. Not that the meat was needed to cover nutritional needs, no, it was just the better story.
Todays act of storifying ourselves was recently given the name ‚Lorecore‘ by Shumon Basar, who describes this phenomenon as one of late capita- lism. A stage in where we are all characters.
The commodification of self and self-branding though has always existed. It is part of communication within a society. According to what surrounds us and what is seen as worthy, you present what you have. The commodi- fication of self was there, the hunters and their stories were there, Lorecore was there. Just in another dress. The process didn’t really change much since the Middle Ages for example, there are just more social rights now thankfully, and more words. Thus, more options to define ourselves. The realm of language is expanding with every neologism, until it allows infinite identifications.
We learned a lot from social media about us and the image of ourselves. We are aware that we do storytelling. The stock market is thriving, cras- hing, thriving, crashing. The question is what drives the story in the end, what values make the story a good story?

Apophoreta are festive gifts that were raffled or distributed on special occasions in Roman households.
Martial wrote his Apophoreta in view of the Saturnalia, the main occasion for the distribution of such gifts. Not only at the banquet of Trimalchio of Petron but also outside the Saturnalia festival such gifts were raffled off.
The stylish awarding of the gifts apparently included that they were announced by a short original poem (in Martial's case a two-liner). Martial distinguishes between gifts for the rich and for the poor, which are often presented alternately in the Apophoreta. In their quality and value they can differ considerably. For example, Martial poems both to a golden decorated drinking bowl and to drinking utensils made of clay.

«Speculum» is a cross-disciplinary project aiming to create a space for reflection about intimacy, nakedness, sexuality and gender identity. Since too often the term «body» is contrasted with «mind» and thus used to designate a separate reality from the rest of our «being», this project concerns the (re)discovery of the body as an integral part of self-identification.
Refusing the notions of indecency and shame, we want to promote a climate of curiosity and acceptance around nakedness. What relationship do you have to your own genitalia? How do we feel in our skin in the moment of exposure to someone else’s gaze? Is there a clear-cut line between empowerment and oppression of our bodies?
Bringing together various fields of artistic practice, this exhibition strives to explore the physicality of our bodies without reducing them to flesh, asking what it means to be naked in a hypersexualized world.

„Et les rites sont dans le temps ce que la demeure est dans l‘espace.” – Antoine de Saint–Exupery
Thus the writer attributes to the ritual a potential for conveying a feeling of security and defines it further as a symbolic technique of containment. „They transform being in the world into being at home. They make the world a reliable place. They are in time what an apartment is in space. They make time habitable. Yes, they make it walkable like a house. They arrange time, furnish it.“ (*Byun Chul Han, 2019)
In uncertain times, people usually conjure up history, tradition and cultural heritage. Thus a ritual can also be understood as a reflection on a common identity.
The design of the &gt;ritual habitus&lt; is constantly bound to social influences. They transmit and represent those values and orders which carry a community. Rituals often amortize a community without linguistic communication, but through their very own semiotic system. With a view to a society that is growing together more and more, but at the same time individualized, which allows the individual to be isolated from himself and his environment, new forms of community life - new rituals - are needed. As soon as the constitution of space changes, the home must be adequately adapted.
In the ritual framework, things are not consumed or consumed, but needed. Ritual practices ensure that we deal and resonate not only with other people, but also with things. Rituals possess the ability to make accessible the unmistakable aura of earthly material that radiates incessantly from its core. Conversely, the earthly material gives the ritual an anchor to which transcendent experiences can be tied. Thus the ritual connects man and material, space and time.
If we want to understand rituals as „cunstrui humanitas“, spaces must be created in which ritual forms can be spoken about. The exhibition „Pantheon Phantasma“ revolves around the many varieties of our identitary obsession in inhabited space: from rediscovered rites and invented rituals to inflation from the irrational idealization of living and back to the absolute authenticity and originality of the home.

The theme of this year‘s exhibition builds on the recent publication of Byung-Chul Han essay “Vom verschwinden der Rituale” where the philosopher discusses societal and individual isolation processes caused by technical progress and the colonization of time. Increasing egocentrism and narcissistic authoritarianism are causing the urgent necessity to build spaces to explore new forms of shared life and social cohesion.
PANTHEON PHANTASMA DEPENdance, is a microcosm of artistic-experimental togetherness, located right in the underpath gallery space Gold+Beton under the “Ebertplatz”. In contrast to the object focussed main exhibition (which is based in an old fire station only 300 meters away) this venue relies on body based performances, physical- and emotional matters. At this location, interdisciplinary performance art is linked with the retrieve of ritual practices to explore new visionary narratives and socio-political discourses. Doing so Gold+Beton transforms for a week into a temporary territory for an experiential antithesis to normative instructions for action, contemporary production and consumer behavior.
The cultural program invites artists and performance makers from 12 different disciplines to explore the sphere of the ritual as a physical practice. The public will be actively involved in the programme through workshops and participatory actions. Through spoken word and poetry, dance and movement practice, short film screenings, sonic acts, music shows and reading salons, the gallery space and its urban surrounding will alter into a venue for transdisciplinary and participative performance art in the broadest sense. Performers* and audiences become inevitably the shaping factor for various social scenarios in space.
With a focus on the search for a redefinition of social coexistence in the public urban space of Cologne, Ebertplatz with its current socio-political situation is the ideal location for a one week show, dealing with the emergence of new narratives. The aim is to give space to non-binary realities and to explore other forms of community living to facilitate moments of collective dreaming of alternative futures.

Analogue, digital, female, male, solid, fluid: once again, Jana Manfroid and Hannah Kuhlmann will be presenting young design talents at Kunsthaus Rhenania. After its predecessor Homo Ludens (PASSAGEN Prize 2017), Aggregat is the curators’ second PASSAGEN project. Designers and artists explore the pushing of boundaries and test the resilience of clear structures with exhibits at the intersection of furniture and installation.

Playing brings temporary wholeness into our imperfect world and our complicated lives. In playing, we discover our individual qualities and develop our personality. The exhibition presents young talents that discover their personal vision of a playful use of products within the framework of a humorous, multi-sensory and interactive exhibition architecture.
Homo ludens - the playing human is an explanatory model according to which humans develop their abilities primarily through play: The human being discovers his individual characteristics through play and becomes his personality through the experiences made there. Playing is thereby equated with freedom of action. It requires own thinking. The model says: "Man needs play as an elementary form of finding meaning." Into the imperfect world and into the confused life, play brings a temporary limited perfection. The game is the return to the infantile self and lets us be children again in everyday life. Although play is associated with naivety and carelessness, it still requires absolute order.
On different levels the game is framed in basic conditions which manifest themselves through a temporal and spatial limitation. The slightest deviation from the set of rules causes the collapse of a meticulously worked out set of rules. The human being discovers his individual characteristics in the game and becomes his personality through the experiences made there. Within the exhibition "Homo Ludens", young product designers are invited to present their personal visions in the framework of the Passagen framework programme at the Imm, the international furniture fair.
The exhibition is intended to enable young talents to expose their individual vision to playful people by designing the products they show. The focus here is on a humorous and interactive exhibition architecture that frames the curatorial concept "Homo Ludens" in a multi-sensory exhibition.
